Occasionally, for a number of reasons, a tooth needs to be removed from the mouth through extraction. Like a toddler who wiggles out her tooth knowing that it is necessary for her adult teeth to grow, the extraction of adult teeth is done with the knowledge of it being necessary and good for the overall well-being of the mouth and teeth. Dental extraction is an effective method of maintaining healthy teeth in severe circumstances.

The most common circumstance in which tooth extraction is necessary is due to severe tooth decay and damage. When the decay has progressed past the point where a filling, crown, or even root canal will help it, the extraction of the tooth is necessary to prevent dangerous infection.
